| The Old Main Shrine |
![]() The first auditorium of the memorial shrine disappeared in accordance with the order of Daewongun to abolish the auditorium in 1868. During Japanese rule, the eldest grandson of the head family Yi Jong-Ok, the13th grandson of Admiral Yi, had been suffering from debts. The family property had vanished because of the ethnocide policy of Japan. The field around the tomb of Admiral Yi and the land were at stake of being handed over to the Japanese with the auction of The Dongil Bank and The Hoseo Bank. This news was reported in the Dong-A Daily in May 1931. Patriots organized an association in order to preserve the relics of Admiral Yi. They collected a total of 16,021 Won and 30 Jeon from about 20,000 people per year throughout the country in cooperation with the Dong-A Daily. They could then pay off the debts. With the remains they performed the Nakseongsik Memorial Shrine Ceremony to enshrine the portrait of the Admiral Yi. The artist Cheongjeon Yi Sang-Beom drew it on June 5, 1932. They also built the Sajeokbi, a monument of the memorial shrine. With the construction of new main shrine, according to the sanctification project in 1967, the old main shrine was used as a worship shrine and was moved next to the Relics Center in Sept. 1968. |
